Finikounta is a seaside village of Messinia and is one of the most beautiful and picturesque summer destinations of the Southern Peloponnese. It is located almost halfway between Methoni and Koroni.
The village is built on a bay, just opposite the three islands of Oinousses.
The name “Finikounta” is thought to be probably due to the Phoenicians, who landed on the coast of the Peloponnese and founded Finikounta. In earlier years it was mainly a maritime transit centre, while at times it was a base for pirates. The original name of the village was “Taverna”, a name taken from the fishermen who arrived there to rest and enjoy good wine in the village’s fish taverns.
Today Finikounta is one of the most important tourist resorts of Messinia, harmoniously combining mountain and sea. Visitors are mainly attracted by the stunning sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and picturesque landscape.
In Finikounta you will find various beaches depending on your taste. You will find sandy beaches, pebble beaches, cosmopolitan beaches but also secluded and quiet, catering on every need and taste.
In recent years Finikounta has developed excellent tourist infrastructure that will cater to all your needs. There are several restaurants and traditional taverns, where you can enjoy fresh fish, as well as the delicious Messinian cuisine. You will also find various cafes, as well as many tourist shops where you can browse.
