Castle of Methoni village
The Burji, built in 1348 by the Ottomans, is instantly recognisable even if you’ve never visited it, from thousands of photographs depicting its octagonal tower on the sea added to it by the Venetians almost three centuries later. The castle is built on an island which can be accessed via a stone bridge that crosses the waters of the Ionian Sea. Inside it has two main parts, the landward part dominated by an impressive granite column known as “The Morosini Column”. Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour
Which has been successively a Catholic church, a mosque and an Orthodox church, and the Turkish baths capture far more vividly than any book the history of a city that has seen three empires, three great civilisations flourish and decline, and survived to tell their stories. Climbing here and there on walls and battlements and stopping every few steps to gaze at the vastness of the castle in which an entire city once stretched, you constantly end up at the sea. It makes sense because the castle of Methoni touches the Ionian Sea from all but one side.
