What makes castles unique?
Perhaps the appearance and size of the castle tended to reflect the prestige and power of its owner. As castle design evolved, the aesthetics of design became more important and the original military purpose of the castle often shifted to comfort and practicality. And there the concept of the castle was born. Although there is much debate about the original purpose of castles, it is generally accepted that these nobles began building castles for 3 main reasons:
Military
The castles provided protection to the locals from enemy raids in the surrounding area. However the castle was the main residence of the local lord’s army and, therefore, was a difficult target for raiders. In addition, castles were also effectively used as a base for offensive raids into enemy territory.
Over time, castle design evolved from the primitive motte and bailey castles to the formidable concentric castles that were the pinnacle of medieval military architecture. And with this evolution came better defensive and offensive capability.
Administrative
Castles were not just defensive spaces, but also reinforced the lord’s control over his territories. They were a center of administration, providing the nobles with a place to hold courts, to gather for administrative activities, and a place to host visiting dignitaries.
Many castles were also used to control important nearby resources such as travel routes, mills, fertile land and water sources.
Symbols of power
Although designed primarily to provide protection and control of nearby land, not all elements of castle architecture were military in nature. For these local rulers, the display of their economic, political and military power was a key element in the design of their castle.
A European innovation, the castle was considered the private fortified residence of a lord or nobleman . The buildings contained within the castle walls were often multifunctional in design and capable of serving different purposes as needed.
So let us return to our question. What makes castles unique?
Most importantly, while castles have always had some military aspects to their design. They also had to contain a practical and efficient domestic structure within their walls. When most people think of a castle, outer walls are usually what comes to mind. These imposing structures serve as a first line of defense against invaders and help protect the rest of your castle from damage. Because they’re so important, it’s important to understand exactly what makes them unique.
You’ll find that most outer walls are made from stone or brick they’re usually thicker than other parts of the structure, but can still be torn down with enough force behind it. In fact, during medieval times when cannons were used in sieges (a siege is when one army attacks another). Their shells would often shoot through the outer walls without doing much damage at all! Their height varies depending on how high up they sit in relation to nearby mountains; if they were built at an elevation where they could easily be climbed over by an enemy force then this would make them useless as defenses because they’d just be breached without any effort needed at all!
Many castles also had inner moats which could hold back water this would prevent attackers from being able to reach higher ground within their area. This means that even though some sections may have been destroyed by cannon fire or other weapons like arrows/bows etc., this wouldn’t necessarily mean defeat because there was still something stopping them from getting closer towards success
These aspects distinguished the castles from other similar structures such as:
The construction of a fortress, which was not always the residence of nobles or lords. A fortified settlement, which was a public defence. However, over time many castles lost their fortification and gradually evolved into large palaces or country houses.
